Success Stories

Global Climate Change is real. In February of 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded, with at least 90% certainty, that human activity is resulting in global warming. “The worst could mean more than 1 million dead and hundreds of billions of dollars in costs by 2100,” said Kevin Trenberth of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, one of many study co-authors of the IPCC report.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, congregations utilizing energy efficiency and clean energy technologies can cut utility costs by 25-30 percent, saving $8,000 to $17,000 per year. This will also have a profound impact in protecting creation. If each of the nation’s houses of worship cut its energy use and costs by 25 percent, the savings would be nearly $500 million - $500 million to spend on other priorities - while preventing more than five million tons of carbon emissions.

Faith communities are following their calls to environmental stewardship by finding ways they can make their communities more energy efficient. Further, as experts predict that climate change will most harm the most vulnerable of the human population, reducing our “carbon footprint” is also a matter of social justice. Protecting God’s creation is one of the most fundamental ways faith can be expressed, and our partner communities have been superb examples of living their faith.

Backed with this knowledge, faith communities in our area are taking action to cool the planet and motivate their members to do the same at home. The following are their stories.

We have created a page detailing the actions taken by each of the following faith communities. Please click each name to read more.

We have only just begun to respond to this most immediate crisis. As evidenced by these local faith communites, actions which help us cool the planet are doable and have many additional benefits including saving money. Together, we can help solve this crisis.
