Put A Cap on It! in 2009
There is still time to join the over 11,000 people in “caps” and get folks in your congregation involved! To support mandatory caps on carbon, we are collecting photos of congregants wearing, well, caps. We are colleting photos until Memorial Day, so please get yours in. The most important part of any climate legislation is a mandatory cap on carbon that sets reduction targets for global warming pollution based on what science demands. These solutions will spur a shift to a clean energy economy. To take action and to learn how to run this photo petition in your congregation click here. A special thanks to Wendy Burns from Mount Vernon UU who has collected over 130 photos! |
Highlights from Earth Day
Another Earth Day passed with wonderful activities at congregations throughout the area. Feel free to borrow some ideas for next Earth Day or to use at any time during the year:
 |
At the United Christian Parish in Reston, VA, the youth helped to harvest some of the low-hanging fruit from their GWIPL energy assessment walk-through. They changed almost all of the lights in the building to more energy efficient CFLs, (purchased at a discount through www.shopIPL.org) and shrink-wrappeded single-pane windows. |
The youth also helped at St. Marks Presbyterian Church in Rockville, MD, by checking air pressure in tires. Any vehicle running on soft tires is contributing as much as 1.5 extra tons (2,880 pounds) of greenhouse gases to the environment annually. The previous evening , they hosted a concert for all of creation to a sold-out crowd. The audience was inspired by the music of Robin & Linda Williams. Thanks to everyone who came. |

The bikes were blessed as a part of a multitude of activities at All Souls Church, Washington DC. The day included adding your name to the ride share board, a zero trash lunch, an introduction to the new recycling program, and some gardening activities. |
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Gaithersburg MD, kicked off Earth Day this year with a Creation Care Carnival. The activities included a blessing of the houseplants, dedication of their Fruitful Field, Pin-Your-Home-on-Our-Fellowship Wall, and planting of community vegetables.

Our friends in Annapolis celebrated with an Interfaith Earth Day Service. And had a special guest, Congressman John Sarbanes , and yes that is he participating in Put-a-Cap-On-It! |
At UU of Arlington, the carbon diet was marked complete, with 1/10 of the congregation participating. The cumulative actions of the members resulted in the avoidance of 600 tons of carbon emissions which is the equivalent to taking of 170 mid-sized cars off the road. |
