Join Us for a Stop on the Virginia Wise Energy Tour
In Wise, VirginiaAs people of faith we have an obligation to speak up for the voiceless and to make things better, one step at a time. One way to do that is to engage in direct conversation with policymakers. “Human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability.
It comes through the tireless efforts and persistent work
of men willing to be co-workers with God, and without this hard work,
time itself becomes an ally of the forces of social stagnation.”
--Martin Luther King, Jr. ("Letter from Birmingham City Jail," April 16, 1963)

Highlights of Last Month

"The Green Muslim Movement" at National Convention
The Green Muslim Movement sessionThe DC Green Muslims presented “The Green Muslim Movement” at the Islamic Society of North America’s 45th Annual Convention to a room of over 100 Muslims from across the country. The session helped participants understand how to apply in their own lives the environmental awareness firmly rooted in Islamic tradition through the Qur’an and Sunnah. Virginia: Governor’s Commission on Climate Change
In August, Gov. Kaine’s Commission on Climate Change held a public hearing in Richmond to receive input into an action plan being prepared by the Commission. Citizens from throughout the Commonwealth, including fourteen people from “coal country,” passionately urged the Commission to do what is necessary to secure a clean energy future, free of coal plants like the one in southwest Virginia.

Unfortunately, the Governor’s current plan calls for a mere 30% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from what they would otherwise be by 2025. That shady language translates into an actual reduction of only about 7% below today’s emissions. Such a reduction is not even close to what science calls for, what our technology allows, or what other states are committing to and will fail to protect our poor and vulnerable neighbors. And it's far less than what Virginians deserve.

TAKE ACTION: You can add your voice and urge strong science based action, which will protect the poor and vulnerable, by sending in written comments. You can use these sample talking points to send an email to the Commission at climatechange@deq.virginia.gov.
