Highlight from Last Month mdsenate

Fifty clergy from throughout Maryland joined together in raising their voices for a stronger climate bill that protects consumers, invests in efficiency and clean energy, and maintains the EPA authority to regulate global warming pollution under the Clean Air Act.

On Aug 31st GWIPL leaders including Julie Erickson, Alison Bennett, Rev. Cynthia Snavely, Fr. Jacek Orzechowski, and John Combs delivered the signed letter and met with staff in Senator Cardin’s and Mikulski’s offices. The staff seemed supportive of these measures and thanked us for bringing a moral voice to these issues.

Over the fall, they look forward to working with us and with congregations across the county in making sure we get strong climate legislation this year. Maryland and Virginia residents can send an email to their own Senators asking for strong climate legislation here.

On October 22-24, Be a Public Witness through 350.org
On the weekend of Oct 22-24, folks around the world are planning actions to call attention to our need to get carbon dioxide back down to 350 ppm in our atmosphere. Your 350congregation can take part, too -- whether it's by ringing your church bells 350 times, lighting 350 candles, or sponsoring a teach-in about the impacts of climate change on our communities and our world. Let us at GW-IPL know what you are doing (joelle@gwipl.org), and register your event at http://www.350.org/oct24.

We also invite you to join with thousands of others from throughout our region for a community-wide gathering in DC on Saturday afternoon, October 24th at Franklin Park 14th St. and I St. NW, to address the related issues of global warming, pollution, and poverty. Following speakers, music, exhibits, displays and cultural performers in the park, we will march to Lafayette Park across from the White House.

Consider organizing a “contingent” from your congregation at this major action. Learn more at www.350.org/dc.
