Faith Communities in the Spotlight
1. On Wednesday, September 26, Ginny Spevak, of the Earth Stewards Task Force at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, testified before the DC City Council in support of the DC Clean Cars Act of 2007 (Bill 17-0099), which would reduce global warming pollution by 30%. She explained how her group has taken seriously being a steward of creation through activities like selling CFLs, and she emphasized that passage of this bill will help prevent further devastation to our poorest neighbors, like seen with Hurricane Katrina (Read Ginny's testimony). If you are a resident of DC, please take action by sending an email to thank council member Jim Graham for holding the hearing and encourage him to seek swift passage of the bill. Use GWIPL's new online action center to send the email.
2. Ramadan Compact: As the month of Ramadan commenced, a group of "green" Muslims got together and started an experiment to "buy nothing" for the month. The group aims to:
-
"Go beyond recycling in trying to counteract the negative global environmental and socioeconomic impacts of U.S. consumer culture, to resist global corporatism, and to support local businesses, farms, etc. -- a step, we hope, inherits the revolutionary impulse of the Mayflower Compact;
-
To reduce clutter and waste in our homes (as in trash Compact-er);
-
To simplify our lives (as in Calm-pact)"
