Get Ready for Earth Day
We might have just gotten some snow in March, but Earth Day and spring, thankfully, are just around the corner. If you haven’t already, it is time to get started to plan Earth Day on the Pulpit programming for the weekends of April 17- 19 or 24-26. You can check out our Earth Day page to learn more about how congregations last year used this time to engage their congregations in connections between our faith and ecology. To get some good Earth Day sermon ideas, or pass them on to your clergy, check out our 2008 sermon contest entries.
Dominion Means Stewardship Not Destruction
With momentum building all over the country, communities are saying no to coal. From South Carolina to Michigan and a new administration starting to take the right steps to protect creation, we have a perfect opportunity right hear in Virginia to make a huge difference and stop the Old Dominion Power Cooperative from building a new $6 billion proposed coal plant in Surry, VA. To get involved contact Allison.

The Inside Greening Your Congregation
This past month we had three great Inside Greening Sessions in Towson, Howard County, and Arlington. Here are some program highlights of what congregations are up to:
- Towson UU has worked with Our Daily Bread to create some vegetarian dishes that members make to donate to their programs. Read more about it (PDF).
- First Presbyterian Church worked with Howard Country to gave away 40 earth machines and offered a composting class, so recipients would know how to use them.
- Mt. Olivet UMC has saved 6% on their utility costs by implementing a program to guarantee that the lights are turned off and thermostats are set at the right temperatures.
Two more Inside Greening sessions:
Monday, March 23 at 7pm in Bowie: Christian Community Presbyterian Church, 3120 Belair Drive, Bowie, MD 20715.
Thursday, April 2 at 7:30pm in Rockville: Geneva Presbyterian Church, 11931 Seven Locks Rd, Rockville, MD 20854.
Making the Switch – Montgomery County, MD
Make the switch to clean energy through the Clean Energy Rewards program and decrease your impact on our environment. As a resident, business, or organization in Montgomery County you can get a reward – half a cent for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of clean energy you use – for the purchase of electricity generated from clean renewable resources like wind.
Choosing wind energy over fossil fuels helps to improve our air quality and helps protect our environment. In fact, folks just like you have already helped to avoid over 39,000 tons of carbon dioxide by switching to clean energy!
It’s easy. Visit the Clean Energy Rewards web site for a list of suppliers and choose 50% or 100% clean electricity, or renewable energy certificates (RECs).
